The most common error is confusing the hour when the minute hand is past 30 (e.g., reading 3:45 as 4:45 because the hour hand is closer to the 4). Address this by practicing 'the hour hand hasn't reached the 4 yet, so it's still 3 something.' Connect telling time to skip counting by 5s around the clock face. For elapsed time, use open number lines: start at the beginning time, make jumps of hours and minutes to reach the end time. Avoid teaching elapsed time through column subtraction with regrouping of 60 minutes — the number line approach builds understanding and avoids common errors.
