2nd Grade Phonics Curriculum Overview
Second-grade phonics completes the systematic phonics sequence for most students. Instruction covers advanced vowel patterns including vowel teams (oi/oy, ou/ow, au/aw, oo), diphthongs, and r-controlled vowels in more complex words. Students learn to decode two-syllable words by identifying syllable types (closed, open, silent-e, vowel team, r-controlled, consonant-le) and dividing words at syllable boundaries. Common prefixes (un-, re-, pre-, dis-) and suffixes (-ful, -less, -ness, -ment, -ly) are introduced, building both decoding skill and vocabulary. Irregular spelling patterns become a focus as students encounter more words that do not follow predictable rules. By year's end, most students transition from systematic phonics instruction to word study, where they analyze spelling patterns and word origins. Students who still struggle with basic decoding in second grade need targeted intervention, as this is a critical window for phonics mastery.
