4th Grade Grammar Curriculum Overview
Fourth-grade grammar introduces more sophisticated sentence structures and word usage. Under Common Core L.4.1, students learn to use relative pronouns (who, whose, whom, which, that) and relative adverbs (where, when, why). They form and use progressive verb tenses ("I was walking," "I am walking," "I will be walking") and recognize inappropriate tense shifts. Order adjectives within sentences according to conventional patterns, and form and use prepositional phrases. Students learn to produce complete sentences while recognizing and correcting fragments and run-ons. Comma usage expands to include commas before coordinating conjunctions in compound sentences. Vocabulary work emphasizes using context clues, understanding figurative language (similes, metaphors, proverbs, adages), and distinguishing between commonly confused words (its/it's, their/there/they're, your/you're). Grammar instruction is most effective when connected to the revision and editing stages of the writing process.
