Begin parts of speech instruction with nouns and verbs — they are the core of every sentence and the most concrete for young learners. Use physical movement: have students act out verbs (jump, read, think) and hold up objects for nouns. Introduce adjectives by describing classroom objects and playing 'how many adjectives can you add?' games with a single noun. Teach parts of speech in the context of real sentences, not as isolated definitions. Sorting activities work well: give students a list of words and have them sort into noun/verb/adjective columns. Introduce the concept that many English words can function as different parts of speech depending on context ('run' can be a noun or a verb; 'light' can be a noun, verb, or adjective). For upper grades, teach pronouns alongside their antecedents to prevent the common error of unclear pronoun reference. Prepositions are best taught through physical demonstration — have students put objects on, under, beside, behind, and between other objects. Use mentor sentences from books students are reading to identify parts of speech in authentic writing. When students can identify parts of speech reliably, challenge them to revise weak sentences by replacing vague nouns with specific ones and adding precise adjectives and strong verbs.
