6th Grade Math Curriculum Overview
Sixth-grade math marks the transition to middle school mathematics with three major new domains: ratios and proportional relationships, the number system (including negative numbers), and expressions and equations. Under Common Core 6.RP, students understand ratio concepts, use rate reasoning, and solve percent problems. The number system (6.NS) extends to include all rational numbers — students perform operations with multi-digit decimals, divide fractions by fractions, and plot negative numbers on a number line and coordinate plane. Algebraic thinking (6.EE) advances to writing and evaluating expressions with variables, solving one-step equations and inequalities, and understanding dependent and independent variables. Statistics and probability (6.SP) introduces measures of center (mean, median, mode) and measures of variability. Geometry focuses on area, surface area, and volume of increasingly complex shapes. This year requires a significant shift in mathematical thinking from computation to abstraction.
